"Fuck."

It's a single word, but it was a word that dripped with despair as Admins Cross and Fox looked down at the ravine below. A swarm of Paradox Pokémon marched through the ravine towards an open mouth in the rocky wall. Beyond that mouth was one of Rocket's research stations.

It was also where the two had been resting while Howard looked at rocks recovered from the cave. Hell, it had been mildly relaxing until the two had been called to arms. At first, he assumed that Jayden was putting him through one of his grueling training regimes. Nope! It turned out that they were actually getting invaded.

"There's too many. I'm calling headquarters." Howard sighed as he unclipped his communicator from his belt. "It's not worth the risk."

That was the Howard method. He mulled over every action carefully, considering the outcome before making a move. He was also afraid to move. He hated the Paradox Pokemon that came from the past, but even he knew that defeating hundreds of them at a time was essentially impossible.

[break][break] He thought back to the rifts of space that he had investigated with Zev Harcourt once upon a time, the way that the INTERDREAM MIST had leaked so horribly from them and revealed the deepest parts of their subconscious.

[break][break] As the other admin went to unclip his communicator, Jayden jerked his head in disagreement.

[break][break] "Don't bother. No time." A sword immediately swept it's way into his hand. "Plus, you have me."

[break][break] "And our training has improved your strength."

[break][break] And with that, Jayden leaps.

"Multiplied? Multiplied?" The archaeologist sputtered. "This is an exponential increase from the Island Cave! You can't be seri- Jayden!"

He watched as the man fell into the fray with his blade in hand. Only an idiot would do something so rash! There had been no contemplation in Jayden's eyes as he leapt down, only raw determination. The man was unflappable, that was sure.

"Fuck." A single word. Irrelevant.

Where did the man get the courage? Was his fear simply drowned out by Chien-Pao? Howard looked at his belt and took out Shirley's Pokeball. His hand shook has he gripped it.

Fear. He was afraid of that horde. He didn't want to risk himself for such a stupid objective. Admin Cross could die here, and Howard wouldn't lose a wink of sleep. Howard Slayte did not care for Jayden Cross.

Yes, let him die.

"I've hardly improved." Howard muttered to himself as he watched Jayden fight. "A white lie on my behalf, Admin Cross?"

The Cursed would fight on alone.

[break][break] In that moment, professor howard slayte cries went unheard. It didn't matter how loud he screamed. Jayden wasn't Jayden anymore — he was the Cursed.

[break][break] In his hands flashed two crystal swords, both dripping with the blood of men long since-past. The HATRED surged through his bones and he sliced cleanly through their opposition, frozen ice plunging deep into the metal chests of several Iron Moths until they crumpled to the floor like paper ash. Instead of his Ruinous patron, it was his Duoblade that emerged in a flash of light. The SPRINGTIDE STORM blew the remains of Paradox Pokemon away — farther down the cliff's edge.

[break][break] Even without Chien Pao at his side, the Beast-turned-Admin-turned-Ruinous-Beast-Again was a force to be reckoned with.

There was no need to jump in. There had been no need to risk himself, not that he would ever put his life on the line for Jayden Cross.

His contempt for the man threatened to bubble over, before his emotions were tamped down with a heavy lid that would never move. Hatred. Hatred. Hatred. He had enough of it for Jayden, Fern, and Barnaby. He had enough of it for Rocket to drown in it. There was nothing more nourishing than hate.

There was no vessel large enough to hold it all.

He watched the man dance with his blades. Jayden had been born with fortune, wherein Howard had been born with nothing. Envy. Hate. Grudges. As the man danced, Howard wished he would die.

But he never did. Jayden Cross refused to die. As he looked up at Howard, the archaeologist's predatorial eye stared back at Jayden's brilliant blue.

"You had it! There was no need for me to get involved." Howard gave the man a wide smile as he skidded down the cliff. "Besides, you're the one with the swords. I'm just a guy."

"Yes. That's the role of I've made for myself."

The quickness of his response is jarring for the lax admin. Howard was a paradox. He was at his most capable when he was relaxing behind a desk, signing off on shipments or counting coins. His job description was finance and supply. He was at his strongest when he avoided the battlefield entirely.

The age of warriors had ended. Now, quiet men in offices would change the world. Even soldiers like Cillian and Jayden had to bow under the weight of bureaucracy.

"I'm simply here to help, I'm along for the ride to follow my dreams. If that helps someone strong like you or one of the Beasts save the world..." Howard shrugged and smiled. "...that is more than enough."

After a moment, Howard clenched his fist. He remembered his practice. He remembered the words that Navy had spoken to him. The Elite Four's command to keep living.

"I'm improving, though. Thanks to you and your awful boot camp." The Giant Chasm and Area Zero both quaked as the earth rumbled. "Seriously, Jayden."

I hate this man.

"You believe in me. In all of us. You're strong."

"Incorrect."

[break][break] Perhaps, once upon a time, howard slayte's words would have struck a chord in him. After all, how many years had he lived with the same exact philosophy? How much time had he wasted thinking that he was merely a vessel that ought to be filled — that he was merely a pawn to be used in order to fill Rocket's goals?

[break][break] In fact, a small part of him still believed it. In fact, a small part of him could not deny it.

[break][break] But that did not mean he would allow someone else the same fate. Not if he could help it.

[break][break] "I do what any other Rocket would do," he said simply. His eyes lifted, and for a moment, it was almost as if the old version of himself - the one that Howard never got to know - reflected in those aquamarine eyes. "Are you saying you do not believe in us? In Rocket?"

[break][break] The earth rumbles with the promise of two admins who's destinies have not yet been fulfilled.

[break][break] He paused then, vulnerable, as he turned to the other.

[break][break] Not realizing that there was a target already on his back, a gleaming red dot aimed to kill.

The mask went on as Howard strove to protect his position and life.

"Of course I believe in Rocket." The lie fell from his lips as easily as the truth did, now. "I am not my predecessor. I am not Remiel Calcifet , a petulant frat boy deciding to play at crime."

He clenched his fist. The best lies were those that marinated in truth, uttered countless times until deception was indistinguishable from reality. Lies were the bane of historical fact. It was so easy for deception to poison the well and usher in an era of misinformation that future generations could not connect.

A historian who lied was a poor historian indeed.

"I'm just saying that there's nothing wrong with being ordinary. I wish for housing to be cheaper, for food to taste better, for my soaps to air more often on cable. I am only a man. I want to be remembered, but I'm still a man." And the rest of you are monsters, he thought as he regarded his colleague. "If you've forgotten that feeling..."

He clapped the man on the shoulder as Jayden turned to him.

"...then I'm sorry."

Suddenly, Howard's eye narrowed into a primal slit as he saw something. "DOWN!" His voice echoed authority as he tackled Jayden to the side, sending them tumbling to the ground.

The Unown's Hidden Power missed them by inches. Several more Unown appeared around the duo as Howard grasped for his belt and Regice's Pokeball. He reached for the button and pushed it. The Pokeball opened, in a flash of cold wind.

Area Zero froze. Several Unown fell to the ground in an arrangement of thuds. A few remained and fired their Hidden Powers.

The lie is believed, perhaps too easily. Perhaps he should know better than to trust his own family, considering his own upbringing but also considering the evidence that had littered both of their pasts as of recent. It's not just Remiel Calcifet, but also CIAN MAHER. Ashley Shepard. Isaac Merlo.

[break][break] The hand on his shoulder startles him, and should Howard touch him, he would find his fellow admin cold to the touch. But Jayden's expression is not frosty, it is contemplative.

[break][break] He thinks of Grigori Sokolov.

[break][break] "Perhaps, that is enough for you. But I would like more for you, Admin Fox."

[break][break] "You were chosen, after all, for a reason."

[break][break] "Admin Fox was not always a name steeped in —"

[break][break] Blood. Betrayal.

[break][break] His words, however are cut off. Suddenly, a cry and then weight thrown at him as he is tackled to the ground. Immediately, Jayden tenses — his powers lash out ahead of him in brilliant snow, crackling, as snow catalyzes the attacking Unown in the same instant that howard slayte's Regice strikes.

[break][break] They are like the ornaments that fern delaney put on their Christmas tree. Glowing, crystallized representations of the thing that Naomi Sato held so dear.

[break][break] Jayden blinks.

[break][break] "You saved me."

[break][break] And should it not have been him, his expressions - his slow blinks - might have even registered as smug.

[break][break] 'I knew you could do it.'

[break][break] Like praising a small child.

[break][break]

The rest of the Unown quickly fall in the uncaring winter storm.

Chien-Pao was a destructive weapon. A blade meant to be used in the hand of a skilled swordsman. It was a blade first, and snow second. Jayden's snow rushed forward, combining with the oncoming freeze. Regice was a primal shard of the coldest aspects of the world. It was a chunk of ice incapable of melting, hewn from a glacier during humanity's dawn age. It was a tool, but cold was all it had to offer.

Cold, and loyalty. Its objective had never been forgotten.

Defend home.

Thus, everything froze in its presence. Unown. Jayden. Howard. Frost crept across his face from the exposure, and his eye glimmered slightly from the traces of Dynergy that circulated through the Regice's body. For a moment, there was a glimpse of something in the admin's eye.

"I..." Howard grunted as he stared at his colleague. As his mind rushed with thoughts, he came to a conclusion.

He should've let this man die.

But he didn't. Why? He would've been reprimanded for Jayden's death, but it would be understood by command. The DRK Triad were constantly attempting put Avatars under. It would've been a tragedy, but a tragedy free from suspicion. It would've been clean, just, fair.

But it would've been dishonest.

"You would've done the same thing for me. Like I said, you bring out the best in your colleagues."

He offered a hand to help the admin up.

In that moment, in the middle of that unending winter, they look the same. Both faces creased with snowflakes admist the flurries of snow, their faces hold a likeliness that nearly bears a resemblance. Blue eyes that glimmer like diamonds in the dark.

[break][break] And then, the snow melts into spring, and the winter falls from howard slayte's eyes, but not from Jayden's own. Suddenly, CHIEN PAO appears at the other admin's side, brushing up against him, as it licks away the HATRED beginning to brim in the cornerstone of howard slayte's chest, unbeknownst to Jayden.

[break][break] The Cursed glances briefly at the other before grasping his own hand, being pulled to his feet.

[break][break] "We should be careful," he says instead, looking around. There's no evidence of a DRK Triad member, outside of the frozen crystals of Unown. Jayden leans down, as if attempting to grab them, but then they shimmer out of existence. Destroyed, as if they were never there in the first place. His brow furrows.

[break][break] "This isn't good," he murmurs, under his breath. He straightens, glancing around him. It's then that he sees MYSTERIOUS TRACKS carved into the ground. Something about the sight of him stirs something in chest, drawn to it as if there is something deeper about the indentations that he can't quite recall.

[break][break] "Do you see this?"

[break][break] After all, sometimes he can't trust his own mind.

Chien-Pao's touch is cold, but not nearly as cold as Regice. Snow kisses the skin and leaves only a gentle chill. Ice is hard and uncaring and unyielding. If snow was hard, it would be ice.

Chien-Pao is not ice, therefore there is no need for Howard to fear it. Nonetheless, he does. The admin remembers his experience getting chased by it through the streets of Sootopolis. He looks at it, then at Jayden, as if expecting to see strings dancing from his joints and limbs.

Jayden did not dance for anyone but Rocket.

Nonetheless, Howard allows Chien-Pao to sup upon the hatred brimming in his soul. His is a vessel that holds archaeology and passion and contempt and scorn. There is plenty for the Ruinous Beast to feast upon, so it does. It can devour the rage Howard feels for this organization and for the people within.

Maybe when it was s done, all it'd leave behind something comparable to kindness and love.

"I do." The two admins stand next to one another as Howard inspects the footprints. A meticulous gaze combs the footprint. It doesn't look familiar to him, but he suspects that Jayden knows where it's from. "Don't worry, it's old. A few days, at least."

Jayden was not losing his mind.

"Do you recognize these?"

Jayden is not losing his mind.

[break][break] At least not within these walls of Rocket, when there are anchors such as THEO BECKETT or Elisabeth Fiorelli or — in this case, howard slayte, to ground him. Regardless of whether or not they know it, it is howard slayte that this RUINOUS BEAST enjoys best of all, especially compared to the other admins that fall within the CURSED's rank.

[break][break] More than the one who always caused an outburst of love and affection to be born within his chest, the one who inherited such a FICKLE guardianship.
